Remember the Sunscreen Song? Well, it was officially known as Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen) and it was a MEGA hit in 1999. Coincidentally, the year I graduated from high-school.
It may have always seemed cheesy to you, but I found it profound at the time. I know, blame the teenage agnst (or something like that).
I watched this video today and it had the same effect on me as that song did way back in high-school.
Watch this. Share this. It’s a great reminder for us all.
We’ve logged a lot of miles and kilometers in all the hustle and bustle in the last few weeks. A slow shutter capture of my glasses in an i5 traffic jam.
@AmiSanyal took some portraits of me yesterday. For the last shot we did something MEGA crazy. Can’t wait to see the final shot!
@JeremyCowart's LifeFinder Tour! AAAH! EXCITED!
AAAAAH! @ZachBulick and I are heading to Seattle on Friday early in the AM to catch Jeremy Cowart’s LifeFinder Tour. We’re CRAZY excited.
@KevanGilbert and I had a lot of fun at @EverythingCafe yesterday.
Vancouver. Last night.
Uncovering Vision // @UGM's Art Show on the #CultureCrawl
The Eastside Culture Crawl is this weekend. And with over 10,000 visitors, it’s the largest cultural event in East Van. Boom.
For the last two years, I have coordinated and curated Union Gospel Mission’s art show which is part of the Crawl. Tomorrow we’re kickin’ off Crawl weekend with an awesome event and you’re invited.
At the event, you’ll see fabulous photographs created by participants of PHOTO 101, a photography exploration of the #DTES that I co-facilitate with Kevin Clark, and have a chance to meet these awesome artists. You should come. It’s going to be amazing.

A collection of images I photographed on my iPhone 3Gs in NYC in October 2011 - days after Wall St. became occupied. See the collection here.
PHOTO 101 is a six-week photography workshop I co-facilitate with Kevin Clark in the Downtown Eastside at Union Gospel Mission for men working through addiction recovery.
Each week, we venture out on a photowalk in a neighbourhood, which many people around the world consider to be a ghetto, slum or skid-row. A place to avoid. A place to be scared of. The neighbourhood is full of heartache, addictions and atrocities. But it is also full of beauty, hope and community. In the DTES, you’ll see selfless acts of camaraderie and love that will move you.
We just wrapped up our third year of PHOTO 101 and the work that these students produce is remarkable. Each week we shoot a few rolls of 120 film with HOLGAS and celebrate the results the following week.
Kevin and I just selected the images that will make up part of our art show on the Eastside Culture Crawl on November 18-20th. Be sure to mark your calendar. You don’t want to miss this.
Special thanks to Rocket Repro. Their support makes this program possible. And Zach Bulick for makin’ our AWESOME new PHOTO 101 illustration (above).
Liberate Your Pixels!
And make some cool shit. #ShitLeahGreggSays
Yup. That’s what I think.
As a creative person, I think it is easy to constantly judge what we produce compared to the work of other creatives. People who inspire you and inform your work are great. It’s a critical part of the process.
But it becomes toxic when your admiration begins to feed into fear. Fear that you’re not talented. You have no gift. Your point of view has no value in the world. Thinking things like, “Ugh. I’ll never make anything as good as that.”
But that’s not true. So, stop hiding your pixels. Liberate them. Share them. Let them exist outside of your hard drive and screen. You will be encouraged. You will grow. You will learn. I know for sure. Because I have.
